It was one of the largest bases of the U. S. Air Force's Strategic Air Command during its existence, and was transferred to the newly created Air Combat Command in 1. The base's origins began in 1. New England Division of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The chosen site, in northeastern Maine within both Limestone Township and Caswell Plantation, was the closest point in the continental U. S. The base was originally named Limestone Army Air Field, and was renamed Limestone Air Force Base following the establishment of the Air Force in 1.
It was named in 1. Major Charles J. Loring, Jr., USAF, a Medal of Honor recipient during the Korean War. From 1. 95. 1 to 1. Caribou Air Force Station. Loring was home to a civilian population, many of whom were employed alongside active duty service members. The base included many amenities, such as a hospital, school, and ski hill, which facilitated the adjustment to Maine life by the civilians. The 1. 99. 1 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that Loring be closed and its aircraft and mission be distributed to other bases in the nation.
The base was closed in September 1. It was redeveloped by the Loring Development Authority as the Loring Commerce Centre, an industrial and aviation park; the airfield is operated as Loring International Airport. Overview. This plan was only partially completed due to budget constraints, but, over time, Loring became one of the largest air bases of SAC.
After the B- 3. 6 was phased out, the B- 5. Stratofortress was based at Loring, first with D models, then with B- 5. Gs. The Boeing KC- 9. Stratofreighter was also based there for a number of years, until it was replaced by the better- known KC- 1. A Stratotanker. Caribou Air Force Station was the weapons storage area that operated separately from Loring until it was absorbed in 1. On- base facilities included the Alert Area, which operated as a separate facility within Loring, due to crews being constantly stationed on alert. The host wing at Loring was the 4.
Bombardment Wing for all but a small portion of its early existence. Loring was primarily home to active duty units, although this changed in the 1. Massachusetts Air National Guard's 1.
Fighter Squadron sent a detachment to Loring. As the base was the closest in the U. S. The wing had the ability to deploy at any time to support both SAC, and later, ACC missions. It was operational at Loring from 1.

After beginning a dive bombing run and getting hit, he entered into a controlled dive and destroyed a Chinese gun emplacement on Sniper Ridge that was harassing United Nations troops. Limestone Air Force Base was renamed in his honor.
Loring, Jr., who was killed in the Korean War. The closest Air Force base on the east coast to Europe, it was originally built with a capacity of 1. B- 3. 6 Peacemaker bombers and equipped with a 1.
This in turn allowed for it to have the largest capacity for weapon storage and for fuel storage in all of SAC. The weapons storage capacity was the highest in all of SAC, 1. NEW (Net Explosive Weight), and it was first in all of SAC in fuel storage capacity (9,1. Furthermore, it was one of two fully capable conventional weapons storage facilities in CONUS maintained by SAC. Air Force bases were constructed along the northern border of the continental U. S.; their most direct route to the Soviet Union was through the Arctic Circle.
These sites were high- importance strategic bases for hosting long- range missiles and aircraft. In 1. 94. 7, the New England Division of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers chose a site in northeastern Maine, within both the Limestone Township and Caswell Plantation.
The remote site consisted mostly of dense forest, shallow marshes, and wild blueberry bogs, on a slight plateau over the town, which helped keep it above the fog most of the time. Only a small part of the base was suitable for farming, so there was little impact on Aroostook County's agricultural community. Additionally, Loring was not far from sources of materials for runway, taxiway, and parking apron construction. The most important benefit of the site was that it was a few hundred miles closer than any other base to potential targets in Europe. Note the additional third runway that was planned, only a part of which was built as a taxiway.
On 1. 5 April 1. 94. Limestone Army Air Field, the first Strategic Air Command base designed and built to host high- speed aircraft, including the new B- 3.
Peacemaker. Original plans for Limestone called for two parallel north. The multimillion- dollar project was not built to the specifications of the original Army Corps of Engineers plan, and only one north. This included the north. At the time, it was the largest monolithic arch roof structure in the United States, and one of the largest hangars in the world. The construction of the hangar was also groundbreaking, including a foundation set on bedrock, extensive footing structures, intricate formwork, and a 3. The airfield in northern Maine was subject to freeze- thaw cycles and had bogs and various types of groundcover; 2.
The foundation of the runway was constructed to a depth of 7. This was all done on a runway that was 1. On the 1. 0th, the 7 officers and 7. Limestone Detachment arrived, as the tenant unit during construction. Two days later, an aircraft from Oklahoma arrived.
On the 1. 5th, limited operations began at Limestone, as Cold War tensions began to heat up. The next day, a B- 3. Peacemaker arrived and later departed. July brought the re- designation of the Limestone Detachment as the 4.
Base Service Squadron. After the Korean War broke out, the decision was made to increase the squadron's size to 2. August brought the first permanently assigned aircraft, a C- 4.
Skytrain, and more aircraft using the base as a stopover between the States and Europe. Eight additional hangars were constructed at the southwestern end of the runway, as well as a 2,1. The Department of Defense allocated funds for the North River Depot, a weapons storage facility to the northwest of the base. It later became Caribou Air Force Station and was absorbed into the facility in the 1.
The end of the year brought the completion of a communications facility, a hospital, three barracks, a school, an officers club, a bakery, and a briefing and training building. The base was one of the first constructed after World War II and also one of the first to retain as much surrounding vegetation as possible in case there was a need to camouflage the airfield and surrounding facilities.
It ditched the traditional layout of a grid system for roads. Lemay, Commander of SAC, visited the base to review the construction's progress. During this visit, he indicated that Limestone was operationally ready. Later that month, command capabilities were formally transferred to SAC, ending an almost six- year command by the Army Corps of Engineers. Furthermore, personnel of the 4. Base Service Squadron were reassigned to the 4. Bombardment Wing, which was reactivated and assigned to the 8th Air Force.
On 2. 3 February, Limestone Air Force Base officially became operational. In March and April, the base began preparing for operations of the B- 3. April. This gave the newly activated 6. Bombardment Squadron a full complement of aircraft. By the end of August, the number had increased to 2. Additionally, more buildings were constructed on base, making it more of a home for airmen and their families.
On 1 October, the base was renamed after Charles Loring Jr., and became . One week later, the 4. Air Division was activated at Loring and designated the primary base unit. It was also designated that month as the primary staging location for fighter aircraft flying out of the Continental United States to and from Europe. Loring had 6. 3 permanent aircraft assigned, and air traffic was significantly increased. The first KC- 9. 7 Stratofreighter arrived at Loring with the activation of the 4.
Air Refueling Squadron in January 1. The B- 3. 6's were not actually equipped to perform aerial refueling, so the planes supported other units until the arrival of the B- 5. Eventually, 2. 1 tankers were based at Loring, along with 3. A hospital became operational. The next January, a B- 5.
Five months later, the first Stratofortress, the . On 1. 0 November, the Soviet Union threatened to oust British and French troops from the Middle East, days after the end of the Suez Crisis. After a response by president Dwight D. Eisenhower to the United Nations, a reporter with the Associated Press visited Castle Air Force Base in California after SAC was alerted to support whatever action the U.

D or any government agency unless otherwise noted. They should do whatever they need to do for their difficult jobs. Especially the guys and girls standing in US uniforms in broad daylight in combat zones. If they need prayer and chaplains to help them so be it. But if it was me I wouldn't ask for it because I am an atheist and can't bring myself to believe in a christian god.
I also don't believe in unicorns, santa claus (gasp), and the 4,2. But I am tired of bowing my head in prayer at every dinner function, change of command ceremony, and military function. A class graduates (most of them do by the way) and I have to bow my head and thank the lord for giving them the strength to get through this tough course. Of course if something did happen and someone did die then I would also have to bow my head in prayer for them not getting through the course? I don't get it, but fine you can believe whatever imaginary thing you want. I believe a founding principle of this country is freedom from religious persecution.
The first sentence of the First amendment says . I have great respect for the young men and women who have openly said they are atheists. I was up for promotion and thought .
I only wish I had more courage to come out earlier and be more vocal like you guys. There is not a single open atheist in congress of any level of government (state and above). There is not a single secular chaplain. And yet over 2. 0% of the general population, and of the military, claim no religious affiliation.
I urge you to stand up for your beliefs and make it known that we exist, and that we are dedicated to making a positive influence on this world through moral and right acts, based on reasoning and human compassion, not ancient archaic beliefs. And yes we are in the military. Return to Top. Air Force Senior Airman Christopher Aviles. Specialty: Security Forces. Dates of Service: June 2. Present. Growing up I was told I was a Catholic, but was never taught the Bible or knew what was being said in Church. I have always followed my own secular belief which involved science (which includes peer reviewed empirical evidence), logic, reason, and humanitarianism.
I came out as an Atheist when I was deployed and took the time to research and inform myself of the questions I had about the world . I realized simply, that my way of life, was shared by others called atheist/humanist.
The quickest path to confirming my atheism was simply reading the Bible and the horrible things their God invokes. Ever since then the realization of the majority of Christians, along with other religions, are living their lives based on a book they have never read shook me. The idea of faith, which is belief without evidence or good reason, has always been a revolting notion.
And I have been doing my part in freeing minds by education ever since. I'm good without any gods, and will continue to serve proudly in every aspect. Return to Top. Among the various research studies I personally reviewed, there were some that had looked at whether Prayer effected outcomes. All the studies I saw indicted that Praying had no effect, whatsoever, on the outcome for individuals who were recipients of prayers. I personally believe that praying to an imaginary god is an exercise in talking to yourself. If it makes you feel better to talk to yourself, then go for it. My father (a WWII Vet, now deceased), used to say Pray in One hand and . Pretty much my opinion as well.
With respect to experiences regarding religion and the military, when I first arrived at Incirlik, Turkey as a new Personnel Captain, one of my very first assignments (until I got to my permanent section chief job) was as an Investigative officer for a situation in which an Officer had had negative dealings with a Wiccan. So, I diligently studied Wicca, and interviewed as many folks as possible and reported that the Wiccan had been . Other dealings I had with . All of the Chaplains with whom I dealt were fair, above board, and more interested in actually helping than in proselytizing their particular religious perspective. In fact, some of the best philosophical discussions I had were with Chaplains, especially after the OK City Bombing.
I was on one of the Stress Incident Debriefing teams with a Chaplain when our Security Police members and their service dogs came back from doing recovery operations there. I have nothing but respect for most of the Chaplains with whom I have personally dealt. I am very certain that even as an out and open Atheist, I can deal with the base chaplains in an honest, open, respectful manner. Return to Top. Navy Chief Petty Officer Douglas Wright. I was raised primarily in the Baptist church. Though my father was an atheist, my mother was a staunch believer and I never doubted that I was saved and was going to Heaven.
Sunday school was mandatory and, ironically, it was there that the first seeds of doubt were sown in my mind. I had always been an avid reader and tore through science books constantly, which prompted some uncomfortable questions from me to my teachers. Of course, the answers were vague and even I could tell at that early age that something was not adding up. Around the time I joined the Navy I had realized that Christianity was no longer fulfilling to me and I began to poke around at other religions to try to fill the void. I still thought that faith was necessary for moral guidance, so I dabbled in Islam and took an interest in Buddhism for a short time. Slowly I began to see the recurring patterns of religion and realized that, while all religions could not be right, they could all be wrong. Eventually I reluctantly embraced the harsh conclusion that it was unlikely that God existed, but it eviscerated my faith and left me unsatisfied.
It was in my mid- thirties that I stumbled upon Humanism. It proved to be the missing piece that changed my outlook on life and provided a solid base for my ethical worldview. Since that day I have never looked back. I am a currently a Humanist Lay Leader with the American Humanist Association and MAAF. Currently I am focused on both getting the Navy at large to accept and support Humanism and connecting with other atheist organizations in the San Diego area.
